Program Overview

Why study a boilermaker course?

 

When you study a boilermaker course, you learn the fundamental principles of boilermaking, and you gain the basic skills you need to start your career as a boilermaker. While it is possible for you to enter a boilermaking apprenticeship without first completing theoretical training, it will be easier for you to find an apprenticeship if you already have some form of relevant qualification or training behind your name.

Some of the things that you might learn about when you study a boilermaking course include the following:

 

How to assemble, maintain, and repair boiler tanks using welding machines

How to inspect and test boilers for leaks and other defects

How to replace broken valves, pipes, and joints

Depending on which course you study, you will also cover other relevant subjects, such as Mathematics and  engineering science

 

Educational Requirements

Grade 9 Certificate
Some employers demand higher qualifications

Compulsory Subjects: None
Recommended Subjects: Mathematics, Physical Science, Technical Drawing and Trade Theory

Apprenticeship Training:

If you want to become a boilermaker you need to register with an employer providing suitable training.

Training consists of theoretical and practical work:
– Theoretical training: N1-n6 qualification at a our technical (FET) college 
– Practical training: In-service training under supervision of a qualified tradesman.
– Duration of course: 80 weeks to 4 years.
– Final examination: A compulsory trade test set by the Department of Labour to qualify as an artisan.

Additional Requirements:

If you want to become a boilermaker you must be at least 16 years old.
A boilermaker should be familiar with basic safety precautions applicable to this trade.
